On June 17, 2025, Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation hosted a heartfelt appreciation event to honor the decades of dedication and service provided by our wonderful volunteers, many of whom were formerly Auxiliary volunteers. This occasion not only celebrated the Auxiliary’s remarkable contributions but also served as a poignant reminder of the vital role community involvement plays in healthcare.
The Auxiliary’s journey began in 1953, five years prior to the opening of Ridge Meadows Hospital. A dedicated group of local women helped advocate for the establishment of a hospital in Maple Ridge, showcasing their steadfast commitment and vision. Their efforts were instrumental in transforming that vision into reality, leading to the hospital we know today.
Over the years, the Auxiliary has made significant contributions to patient care by raising over a million dollars for essential equipment and community programs. Although the Auxiliary will no longer function as a formal society, their spirit of volunteerism lives on, particularly through the ongoing support at the hospital gift shop.
During the appreciation event, attendees had the opportunity to tour the hospital and explore specialized equipment funded by the Auxiliary. The highlight included a demonstration of the ceiling lift, courtesy of Ian Peters, showcasing how these resources directly improve patient care and comfort. Ron Antalek graciously helped demonstrate how the ceiling lift works as a patient stand-in.
Awards were presented to volunteers in recognition of their years of service, with one of the most distinguished honors being a 35-year service award bestowed upon Stina Nurmi. Alongside fellow gift shop manager Sheila Dodgson, Stina has exemplified the spirit of volunteerism at Ridge Meadows Hospital. Board chair Heidi Einhorn, along with fellow board members Ron Antalek and Eva van Gunsteren, handed out service awards, celebrating the dedication of volunteers ranging from one-year to multi-decade commitments.
Luauna McCartney, the hospital’s executive director, also expressed gratitude on behalf of the hospital, reaffirming the importance of the Auxiliary’s legacy in shaping the community’s health services.
As we reflect on the incredible impact of the Auxiliary and our committed volunteers, we are reminded that their legacy is one of generosity, compassion, and unwavering support for patient care. Their hard work continues to make a profound difference in the lives of those in our community, and their story is one that will inspire generations to come.
Let us honor their legacy and embrace the spirit of volunteerism that enriches our hospital and community every day. Thank you to all the volunteers for your dedication, compassion, and commitment to making Ridge Meadows Hospital a caring and supportive place for everyone.
